Hello: My Name is John Edmondson. Pure Compassion Ministries is simply me working to do the job outlined in the purpose of this ministry. This website is an introduction to what we are currently doing and why; and an invitation for you to participate in this work. I am so pleased to be able to show you this Web Site. I will let it explain the work we are doing, and hope it will enable you to decide if you will help. So, Welcome!

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

In order to keep overhead low and our ability to deliver help flexible and timely, I partner with faith based ministries (like Orphans Unlimited or Iris Ministries) and other humanitarian aid organizations (such as UNICEF, Americares, and Proctor & Gamble). Rather than spend my available time raising money to support overheads of an organization, I spend it raising funds to directly supply these groups with special products for delivery directly to the people who need it. Once enough is raised to economically deliver a load to people in need, I coordinate the transit, regulatory and communication agents to make delivery possible. I arrange for the purchase and distribution of the products through these organizations, who are already 'on the ground' and committed to long-term, on-going support of the people who will receive this aid.

When you contribute, we are working together to supply efforts already in process by legitimate small groups or ministries that have trouble doing everything needed for their projects on their own and within their budgets. We are helping to share in their burden of relief aid, health and housing, education and other basics which together change people's lives toward health, prosperity and the hope of happiness. These are things we often take for granted, but they are great blessings to those who lack the building blocks to 'make it so'.

My own first efforts a number of years ago were in supplying building materials to Kosovo so houses could be rebuilt before winter came after the war there. God gave us partners in Samaritan's Purse, several lumber and building supply corporations, and even the US military, who made it possible for the safe, black-market free transportation of the goods to exactly where they were needed and for whom they were intended. This was a miracle! It was a model which I have returned to after working with committees and trying to work directly as an employee of various church, para-church or aid organizations. Too much of people's contributions go to raising more money; as happened in Sri Lanka after the tsunami and New Orleans after hurricane Katrina, too much of funds raised never reach the people for whom they were intended, or not in time to meet their basic needs in crisis; and massive amounts of time are required to raise and manage such funds! Being too direct to do that, I elected to return to the model of Kosovo, a single person setting out to do a job when it was needed to get some practical help to those who needed it and in time for their need. It is thrilling and rewarding work!

There are people in crisis in our world every day. So there is no shortage of folks who need our help. There are also ministries and groups all around the world who are set up, already raising the staffing budgets, and are committed to specific local communities for the long haul. Pure Compassion Ministries acts as an independent agent who supports these ministries & groups by supplying critical access to products that are either outside their mandates, beyond their budgets, or outside their staffing ability to procure. These products support basic physical needs and are supplied by people setting a Christ-like example of active spiritual life.

CURRENT PROJECTS

Right now we are focusing our efforts on raising funds to supply either large shipments of PUR or individual family packs of it to organizations in these countries. PuR is an amazingly cost effective way of providing clean and safe drinking water to those who do not have it. Enough PuR for a whole village can be transported in a large suitcase. A purifier of water, PuR (by Proctor & Gamble) allows an individual to convert the filthiest, most contaminated water and make it clean and safe to drink in a matter of minutes. Since a person can live 40 days without food, but only 3 without water, we consider the provision of drinking water to be a very basic need.

According to the World Health Organization safe drinking water is one of the worlds greatest needs. More than 1 billion people in the world lack safe water,and an estimated 2.2 million children die each year from diarrheal diseases, many of which could be prevented by safe drinking water. For people in developed countries it is hard to imagine that simply drinking a necessary glass of water, for millions of people in the world, means taking their life in their hands.

I think we have all seen the photos of sick and dying children and heard endless statistics about need and diseases. If you are like me, the scope of the problem seems overwhelming. The provision of PuR through Pure Compassion Ministries provides a simple and tangible way to start solving basic needs for safe water around the world one family at a time..

To date we have supplied almost 500,000 packets of PuR free of charge to ministries in developing countries. Given that one packet of PuR purifies 10 liters of water this is almost 5,000,000 liters of fresh drinkable water supplied directly to those who need it. To provide water that doesn't kill one's children, that frees one from daily diarrhea, that keeps ecoli from feces or dead animals from being ingested in meals, that doesn't contain worms or other parasites that feed on the people who drink it , that does not require resources to procure it that they do not have, this can literally give people the strength to carry on. This is a gift worth giving.
